It was free exhibited at Royal Academy of arts which I think is really worth going.
I was surprised by his self-taught experience. It reminds me of Aubrey Beardsley was self-taught as well. They are really gifted people. Maybe this kind of freedom gives them power.
He is so good at atmosphere creating, especially the night-time scene. These works have a strong sense of space and quiet emotional and his expression is precise and clear that I can feel his mood.
Although he was renowned for the self-portrait, I think the other portraits works is not worse at all. The Absinthe Drinker is my favourite one. There is no extra skill in this painting but these colour blocks formed this woman who is so interesting and active. And this style reminds me of Edvard Munch.
